Calibrate Your New LED/LCD/Plasma TV, Manufacturer Does Not Tell You How!

Do you know how to calibrate your TV?

Whether a full HD, LCD, Plasma or standard CRT TV.

Firstly, freeze a scene on a dvd that has dark and bright areas
Turn your ‘brightness’ setting (completely down or off), all the shadowy areas will (hopefully) be black, then slowly increase the brightness whilst watching the shadowy areas until you see detail and the black areas are still deep black.
Next, focus on a bright area with detail, turn the contrast right down (the whites go grey), then slowly turn the contrast up until the whites are as white as possible with clear detail.
Now check the blacks are black and whites are white, if they are not, simply go through steps 1 and 2 again until they are!
Now turn off the ‘Sharpness’ or ‘Detail’……..and increase it until the picture is as sharp as you prefer. (change your dvd scene to a facial scene)
Now turn your colour setting off or right down and then increase it until you get a realistic skin tone.
Adjust ‘Tint or Hue’ so you can’t detect any green or magenta.

This is the most natural reproduction your TV is capable of!

It will take a while to get used to the picture, depending how high the settings were originally, you may think it is ‘a bit dark’ but your eyes will readjust.

Now, you may not need to buy a new TV and if you do, you now know how to calibrate it!

OSRAM First OLED Light Source-Orbeos

OSRAM Opto Semiconductors announce its first OLED light source for premium functional lighting – the light, thin, non-glare, warm white Orbeos. The new energy-efficient surface-emitting panel is especially suited to premium applications in architecture, hotels and catering, offices, private homes and shops.

The Orbeos OLED panel has a round lamp surface of 80mm diameter, an ultra-thin design at only 2.1mm thick and weighs 24g. These limited dimensions ensure a variety of flexible, application options. With an efficiency of 25lm/W, the panel exceeds that of conventional halogen lamps. Its warm white color temperature (2,800K, CRI up to 80) matches the warm light of an incandescent lamp and is suited to lighting that is atmospheric and functional at the same time. OLEDs give off a pleasant, non- glare light and are especially well-suited for use in homes, museums, restaurants and hotels.

OLEDs open up totally new design possibilities for architects, lighting planners and designers as it is now possible to create illuminated areas with them such as lit ceiling or illuminated partitions.

Orbeos can be switched on and off without delay and is continuously dimmable. Unlike traditional LEDs, its heat management is simple. The panel contains no mercury and emits no UV or infrared radiation. Its brightness level is typically 1,000cd/m2 with power input of less than one watt. In ideal operating conditions it has a lifespan of around 5,000 hours. Orbeos is available with a frosted glass surface. The panels can be easily mounted using spring contacts.

The rapid advance of OLEDs in general lighting has succeeded largely as a result of the technical principles of the ‘Organic Phosphorescent Lamps for Applications in the Lighting Market’ project (OPAL), which is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).

This could be the latest design concept for GPS device. Designed by Russian Designer Art Lebedev, the Navigarius offers a round screen and an interesting form factor to set it apart from standard fare.

The concept gadget has a touchscreen, microSD card reader and a USB port. It also includes a power adapter that can be plugged into your cigarette lighter in your car. The mount is very small and curved, offering a more stylistic appeal than standard mounts.

Personally, I like this this design and I believe very soon, a significant number of GPS maker will use that design which is revolutionary. The Navigarius potential will be huge.

iRobot developes New Roomba Clean Every Corner

iRobot Corporation has filed a patent for a new Roomba design that could clean the areas that is hard to reach. The new design features a square front end and a round rear that enables better cleaning of corners and wall edges while retaining most of the iconic round robot’s maneuverability and escapability.

However, there are disadvantages to the new shape. Theoretically, it is easier for a square robot to get stuck when requires more complex maneuvers. For example, when hitting a corner, the robot cannot turn. It must back out of the corner first, lest one of its corners smack against the wall. The idea is that the square side of the Roomba will be in front, with the rounded side in back for easy maneuvering when in reverse/escape mode.

Ideally, according to the patent filing, the robot’s brushes would be as flush with the front of the robot and the corners as possible. It will has advantage over the current design which the brushes are in the center and leave several inches unvacuumed.

Whether the square-sided Roomba will become reality, it is still an open question. As long as it cleans better, the potential market will be huge.

Square-sided Roomba has substantial potential advantages, such as the ability housing more powerful vacuum, battery or larger bin, etc. due to its elongated shape. The new design actually features 4 side brushes, instead of the single side brush on all previous Roomba models.

With the fact that existing Roomba 500 series is less than two years old, it is unlikely to see a new generation of Roomba before 2010, especially given current crappy economy.

Recharging Batteries Kinetically with Baoding Balls

Jiang Qian, a Shanghai based designer has designed a unique baoding ball that utilizes kinetic movement which transform the energy into electricity to recharge batteries while being rolled in the users’ hands.

Baoding ball, or better known as Chinese exercise ball is able to exercise your finger and hand and more importantly, it is believed to have similar effect of acupuncture which stimulates your acupuncture points for better health and life. Good thing now is that, while you are playing with the baoding ball when watching the TV, reading book or doing nothing, you are actually able to charge up either AA or AAA size batteries without really realizing it. There are even LED indicators on the ball surface to inform you if the battery charging capacity is already full or still needs some more exercise.

No pricing and availability yet, this is definitely a brilliant idea on how to reuse energy without consuming extra of what we normally do.

Festo shows off robot penguins and other visions of the future

The folks at Festo have already proven themselves to be more than adept some intoxicating, slightly unnerving feats of robotics, but they look to have really outdone themselves with their latest group of creations, which all fall under the banner of the company’s Bionic Learning Network.

While they’re all certainly impressive, the real star is undoubtedly the AquaPenguin which, in addition to being creepily realistic, is fully autonomous and even able to outperform its real-life counterpart in a few tasks, like swimming backwards. Of course, Festo apparently couldn’t help themselves and also built a flying, blimp-like AirPenguin, and they applied some of the same basic technology to a number of other devices, including a robot arm that’s precise enough to change a lightbulb, and a freestanding interactive wall that’s sure to spruce up any lobby.
