Michael Jackson Hair Caught Fire During ’84 Pepsi Advertisement (Video)
New footage of Michael Jackson’s 1984 Pepsi commercial accident, filmed in L.A.’s Shrine Auditorium has surfaced that offers a clue to how the late singer became addicted to painkillers.
The clip, obtained by Us Weekly magazine, shows one take where the pyrotechnics exploded as planned — after Jackson descended the stairs and began performing with his brothers.
On the sixth take, though, things went wrong: The fireworks erupted too early, igniting Jackson’s head in flames. Jackson is at first unaware he’s on fire, and continues dancing.
Once he realizes his head is on fire, he frantically spins in circles and takes off his jacket to fend off the flames. People then rush the musician to help put out the fire that leaves Jackson with a bald scalp.
Us claims he was never the same after the accident.
To relieve the second- and third-degree burns on his scalp and body (and later to help him tolerate multiple surgeries on the scorched spot on his head), Jackson was prescribed several medications -- which kicked off his addiction to painkillers and obsession with plastic surgery, multiple sources told Us.
According to ET Online, Jackson donated his $1.5 million settlement with Pepsi to the Brotman Medical Center in Culver City, Calif., where he was treated. (Source: Newsday.com)
